The proposal to rethink passenger flow at the airport was commissioned by Schiphol, Dutch Railways, Prorai (Government Body for construction and maintenance of railway lines and stations) and the Metropolitan Region.  It addressed projected growth in the number travellers going through the airport and the required expansion of the train and bus station that service transit to and from Schiphol. Park and ride and taxi stands were also explored as part of the study that looks ahead to 2030 in terms of how Schiphol will continue to be accessible in the future.

The converged landside transport services at the heart of the airport were reconfigured to better accommodate the increasing numbers of passengers moving about within a constrained space.

As a result, the converged landside transport services at the heart of the airport were reconfigured to better accommodate the increasing numbers of passengers moving about within a constrained space. This decision was based on modelling the data around the movements of people at the very beginning of the design process.  The movement strategy was therefore informed through a careful analysis of how Schiphol has evolved and its current and future need for interconnectivity - yet still leaving the proposal open to interpretation in terms of its formal expression.
